Ancient Bharat led the world in many fields. Drawing on ancient texts, archaeology and modern research, here are the areas where its contribution still shines. Tap an area to meet its scientists.
A civilisation of seekers
For thousands of years, Bharat has asked questions about numbers, the sky, the body and the nature of matter — and found remarkable answers.
Indian mathematicians gave the world the place-value system and the zero, and Brahmagupta wrote the first rules for calculating with zero and negative numbers. Aryabhata explained eclipses and the rotation of the Earth. Sushruta and Charaka laid the foundations of surgery and medicine. Centuries before Europe, Madhava and the Kerala school discovered infinite series for π and the trigonometric functions.
In the 19th and 20th centuries a scientific renaissance gave us J. C. Bose, Ramanujan, C. V. Raman, Meghnad Saha and S. N. Bose — often working with very few resources. Independent India built on this legacy with Homi Bhabha, Vikram Sarabhai, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam and many others, taking India to the Moon and Mars.

Why their stories matter today
Science serves everyone. The work of Indian scientists shows how knowledge becomes public good — from Raman's discovery used in hospitals and laboratories everywhere, to Swaminathan's crops that fed a nation. Investment in science pays back not as quick profit, but as better lives for all.
Excellence through grit. Many of them worked with little money, few instruments and many obstacles. Ramanujan had no formal training; J. C. Bose built his own apparatus. Their tenacity and honesty in the search for truth carried them through.
Builders of institutions. Bose, Bhatnagar, Bhabha, Sarabhai, Mahalanobis and others did not stop at discoveries — they built the institutes, laboratories and academies that India's science still stands on.
Knowledge without borders. Indian science has always been shared for the benefit of all, in the spirit of लोकाः समस्ताः सुखिनो भवन्तु — may all beings everywhere be happy. Age, background and circumstance are no barrier: any student can rise to the same heights.
