String theory — S-duality and tachyon condensation

Story

Prof. Ashoke Sen is one of the world's leading string theorists. His work on S-duality helped show that different string theories are linked, and his study of tachyon condensation changed how physicists understand unstable states in string theory.

Key contributions

  • Pioneering work on strong–weak (S-) duality in string theory
  • Tachyon condensation and black-hole entropy
  • Fundamental Physics (Breakthrough) Prize (2012); Fellow of the Royal Society; Padma Bhushan (2013)
