Lilavati and Siddhanta Shiromani

Story

Bhaskaracharya, head of the astronomical observatory at Ujjain, wrote the Siddhanta Shiromani. Its first part, Lilavati, is one of the most loved mathematics books ever written, full of problems posed in poetic verse.

Key contributions

  • Perfected the chakravala method for solving indeterminate equations
  • Used ideas of instantaneous motion that anticipate differential calculus
  • Wrote Lilavati (arithmetic) and Bijaganita (algebra), used as textbooks for centuries
