Story
S. Chandrasekhar, nephew of C. V. Raman, showed while still in his twenties that a star above about 1.4 times the Sun's mass cannot end its life as a white dwarf. NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory is named after him.
Key contributions
- Chandrasekhar limit for the mass of white dwarf stars
- Nobel Prize in Physics, 1983
- Major works on stellar structure, radiation and black holes
