Karmarkar's algorithm for linear programming

Story

Dr. Narendra Karmarkar, born in Gwalior and educated at IIT Bombay, invented a fast 'interior-point' method for linear programming in 1984. Karmarkar's algorithm transformed optimisation, used everywhere from airline scheduling to telecommunications.

Key contributions

  • Karmarkar's algorithm (1984), an interior-point method for linear programming
  • Paris Kanellakis Theory and Practice Award
  • Worked on new computer architectures for scientific computing
