Bose–Einstein statistics — the 'boson' is named after him

Story

S. N. Bose sent Albert Einstein a paper in 1924 deriving Planck's law in a new way. Einstein translated and published it, and extended the idea. The resulting Bose–Einstein statistics describe a whole class of particles, called bosons in his honour.

Key contributions

  • Bose–Einstein statistics (1924)
  • Prediction of the Bose–Einstein condensate, created in the laboratory in 1995
  • Champion of teaching science in Indian languages (Bengali)
