Story
Prof. Sulochana Gadgil showed that the monsoon is not simply a giant sea breeze but part of a planet-scale system that moves with the seasons. She worked with farmers to plan crops around rainfall variability and helped build the Centre for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at IISc.
Key contributions
- New understanding of the monsoon as a seasonal migration of a planetary-scale system
- Discovered key features of how monsoon cloud bands vary within a season
- Worked with farmers on rainfall-smart farming strategies
- Lifetime Achievement Award, Ministry of Earth Sciences (2008)
