Structure of the ribosome — Nobel Prize in Chemistry, 2009

Story

Prof. Venki Ramakrishnan, born in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, worked out the atomic structure of the ribosome — the machine in every cell that makes proteins. This explains how many antibiotics work. He shared the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and was President of the Royal Society (2015–2020).

Key contributions

  • Atomic structure of the ribosome's 30S subunit
  • Nobel Prize in Chemistry (2009)
  • President of the Royal Society, 2015–2020
  • Padma Vibhushan (2010)
